Subject: Important information regarding the Model
Facility location: The Model Shop's street address is1425 George Ave. and phone numbers are 325-0383 and 307-0856
The purpose of this facility is to provide the College of Architecture’s students, faculty and staff with safety and operational instructions on shop tools and equipment. It is our aim to offer a clean, safe and organized shop environment for the pursuit their academic class assignments as time, budget and space allows. We offer technical guidance in materials, joinery, adhesives, finishes, fasteners, and connections as well as directional supervision in molding, casting, welding, brazing, soldering and laser operations.
All shop users are required to supply their own PPE (personal protection equipment such as safety glasses/goggles, hearing protection, respirators/dust mask and gloves). Shop users are required to supply their project materials, supplies and hardware. The shop will provide a reasonable amount of wood glue, sand paper and pneumatic fasteners.
Shop Hours: The shop is on occasion opened extended hours to accommodate the needs of approaching deadlines, and to prevent overcrowding. This requires additional staffing, and with budget limitations all overtime must be approved in advance. Please encourage your students to utilize the shop during regular working hours (8:00 am-5:00 pm MTWTF), and to avoid waiting until project deadlines to initiate their work
Safety Orientation: All individual and studio group Safety Orientations must be scheduled in advance (325-0382, or 307-0856). Shop safety is divided into three sessions, each lasting from 2 ½-3 hours with a written test at the end of each session. The shop will be closed to all other users while safety training is in session. Level One Safety Orientation covers hand tools and some designated power tools. Students and faculty must have completed Level I Orientation before any shop use or the use of the tools at ARC on MAIN facility. Level Two Safety Orientation covers a variety of other shop tools that could be considered more difficult to operate safely. Most students can accomplish their academic objectives by completing Level One and Two Safety Orientation; as these two sessions will cover most of the shop’s wood working tools. Level Three is for the most hazardous tools and is not required. *** IMPORTANT NOTICE*** Safety training is only offered at the beginning of the fall and spring semester. It is the responsibility of the faculty to schedule and to provide class time for shop safety training for their students. Faculty are urged to inform the students that have transferred in from other universities that they need O.U. Model Shop Safety training if they intend to use the main Model Shop or the mini model shop at ARC on MAIN. If you have not been notified about Model Shop Safety Training you should ask your instructor about scheduling you for Safety Orientation.
Student numbers: For safe equipment use and staff monitoring, no more than 20 student users will be permitted in the wood-shop area at any time.
Facility Usage: Due to the high use demands of the Model Shop it is important for faculty to schedule projects and due dates so they do not conflict with each other. Faculty should contact the Model Shop for scheduling before assigning student projects that require Model Shop usage. For organized and long-range planning COA faculty and Model Shop staff will meet at or near the end of each semester to plan and scheduled the next semesters’ Model Shop activities. Priority will be given to the studios groups that have previously scheduled their projects with the Model Shop management.
The Model Shop will periodically put on a sawmill demonstration and answer questions on the procedures of processing saw milled wood. Students and faculty are invited and welcome to participate. The model Shop facilitates 3-4 furniture /gate design classes per academic year; for that reason we keep in stock a variety of locally harvested utility and furniture grade wood that we process with our saw mill and solar kiln. This wood is available for student/faculty/staff and others at a reduced cost.
The COA Model Shop and the Fine Arts Sculpture studio host an annual Iron Pour. Students from Landscape Architecture participate in this event.
Laser Orientation: Laser safety/operation training must be scheduled in advance. No more than six students per session. Priority for laser training and usage will be given to grad-students, and seniors. Students should have already acquired good AutoCAD skills before they request laser training.
Special Projects: The Model Shop and its staff exist to serve the needs of the instructors and students in pursuit of an academic objective. While we may be willing to assist with other "facility" projects as time and resources allow, this must be subsidiary to our primary mission and will be only when prior approval of the Dean has been obtained.
Communications: Check the events calendar and the COA Model Shop web page at http://modelshop.coa.ou.edu/ for posted shop closures, scheduled Model Shop sessions and events. I look forward to meeting all of the new students. It has been a pleasure to be a part of the College of Architecture, and I look forward to another successful semester.
